Rodent droppings in a garage or attic: what to note before cleanup

Droppings can be a sign of rodent activity, but the location, age, quantity, nearby damage, and entry-point clues matter. This page focuses on documentation and provider questions, not species confirmation.

What to photograph and note

  • Where droppings appear: garage perimeter, attic access, insulation, shelves, pantry, water heater area, or stored boxes
  • Nearby gnaw marks, torn packaging, nesting material, urine odor, or rub marks
  • Possible entry points near garage seals, side doors, vents, eaves, roofline gaps, or utility penetrations
  • Whether there are sounds at night, repeated pet interest, or recent construction/landscaping changes
  • Any cleanup already attempted and whether droppings returned

When to call a provider

Provider follow-up is usually worth considering when droppings are repeated, appear near food storage, appear with attic noises or gnawing, or suggest multiple entry points. Ask how inspection, exclusion, cleanup guidance, and monitoring are handled.
